In Italy the third stage of the Diamond League has finished. The beginning was really amazing. The athletes showed the best results of the season in various disciplines, with Faith Kipyegon from Kenya setting a new world record in the 1500-meter dash. Well, what a beauty!

“I’m really happy”

In general, the scenario in Florence turned out to be extremely uneven. On the one hand, not the best results were shown in many disciplines, on the other hand, many records were set, including a world record.

Perhaps the first interesting final was the women’s 400m hurdles. Femke Bol won.

The Dutch champion ran in 52.42 seconds, the best result of the season in the world. Bol was a second ahead of American Shamier Little, who posted his personal best result of the season. Third place went to Ann Hall, who set a personal record.

“It was my first start in the Diamond League this year and it’s a great result, it met all my expectations,” said Bol. – I’m really happy. I ran the race how I wanted to.”

Femke also added that she intends to fight for the World Championship gold, which will take place in the summer of 2023 in Budapest.

The women were also shocked in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Winner Sembo Alemayehu (9:00.71) set the personal and world best of the season, as well as setting the stage record. Jacqueline Chepkoech from Kenya (9:04.07) and Zerfe Vondemagen from Ethiopia (9:04.61) finished second and third. But the world champion – 2017 Emma Coburn was out of luck. The athlete fell on one of the obstacles, as a result, only in 12th place.

Better than the World Cup

I found something to please the audience and the men. In the 5000 meter race, Mohamed Katir won gold in the closest fight, clearing the distance in 12 minutes 52.09 seconds. The Spaniard was ahead of silver medalist Yomif Kejelchu by just 0.03 seconds! Also, Katir had the best result of the season in the world, while Kejelcha had the best personal result of the season. The top 3 was closed by Luis Grijalva, who lost less than a second with the winner and updated the Guatemalan national record.

But, what is most interesting, in this race as many as 13 athletes managed to run out of 13 minutes! For comparison, at the 2022 World Cup in the US, none of the participants in the 5,000-meter race managed to run out for 13 minutes. The winner, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, ran in a modest 13 minutes, 9 points and 24 hundredths of a second.

The 200 meter race was also amazing, won by 19 year old Herrion Knighton. The American showed the third fastest time this season: 19.89 seconds. In the end, Knighton was well ahead of Jerim Richards (20.28) and Aaron Brown (20.31).

“Now I am very satisfied with this time, and in particular with the fact that in the first race of the season I was less than 20 years old,” admitted Knighton.

“Everything is possible”

The world record in the women’s 3000 meters was a perfect ending to the night of track and field. This discipline has just closed the program for the stage in Florence.

Even before the start of the tournament, Fait Kipyegon stated that he intended to break the world record. It seemed that the Kenyan could really do it, because on a couple of occasions she was close to his target. And this time Kipyegon really succeeded in making his plan come true.

Duplantis’ magnificent world record:

The ingenious Swedish springer creates amazing! Even the great Bubka did not set such records.

Fait covered the distance in 3 minutes 49.11 seconds! So not only did she break the world record of 3 minutes 50.07, set in 2015 by Genzebe Dibaba, but she also became the first woman in the world to run out of 3.50. A truly unique athlete!

Kipyegon ended up in splendid isolation. The closest rival, Laura Mier, was almost eight seconds behind the Kenyan! After the completion of the race and the approval of the record, all the participants in the race rushed to congratulate the Kenyan, surrounding her in massive hugs.

“Yesterday I said that I want to have a beautiful race, my race, and see how far it is possible to break the record. Everything became possible,” Kipyegon said. – My opponents are really special. We act together, we encourage each other. It’s a sport, we have to love each other and celebrate the smallest and biggest victories and I really thank the girls for coming and running with me and celebrating this world record with me. We were part of that together.”

But the record holder is not going to stop there. Kipyegon has already set himself a new goal: to run faster than 3 minutes and 49 seconds.

“That’s not all. I’m still working on running faster than 3.49. Today I’m very grateful to be able to run the distance in 3.49 and I’m still aiming for beautiful races for the rest of the season.”

Who knows, maybe in the near future the Kenyan woman will be able to implement her plan.
