Death Toll From Explosion at Yerevan’s Surmalu Mall Rises to Two

The Armenian National Police Services announced that the second death had occurred as a result of the explosion at the Surmalu shopping center in Yerevan.

Two people were killed in an explosion yesterday morning at the Surmalu shopping mall in Yerevan, reports TASS.

The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia, Armen Pambukhchyan, told Interfax that the body was found by rescuers and the deceased was a woman.

According to reports, many people have been injured during the accident. Search and rescue operations are underway as well. So far, there have been approximately 20 different missing person reports.

The number of victims of the fire has increased to 57 people, with 36 in a state of moderate severity and 40 receiving hospital treatment. The ministry clarified that 15 have been discharged and an additional 15 are receiving aid.

It was the early hours of August 14, when the “Surmalu” shopping center exploded and caused one building to collapse. The mall collapsed heavily, leaving people under multiple sections of rubble.
