Avio tests M10 methane engine for Vega E light vehicle

The Italian company Avio carried out fire tests of the liquid rocket engine M10, propelled by methane and oxygen. SpaceNews reports it.

The tests took place on May 5 at the stand of the Salto di Quirra test site, located on the island of Sardinia. This power unit is designed to be installed in the third stage of the Vega E light vehicle, scheduled for first launch in 2026.

It should be noted that the M10 with environmentally friendly fuel components is “the first engine of this type successfully tested in Europe.” The Vega E rocket will receive three stages, of which the first two – P120C and Zefiro 40 – will be the same as those of the Vega C, and the new third stage will replace the third and fourth stages of the previous rocket modification.

Currently, the Vega carrier with the Attitude Vernier Upper Module (AVUM) fourth stage is operated with the Ukrainian RD-843 engine, which uses toxic heptyl and amyl as fuel components. Titanium fuel tanks for the aircraft carrier are made in Russia.

In January 2020, the head of the European Space Agency (ESA) office in Russia, René Pichel, announced that all Ukrainian and Russian components would be removed from the Italian Vega light rocket.
