Sinn Féin nationalists win Northern Ireland’s first parliamentary election
The Sinn Féin National Republican Party, which advocates Northern Ireland’s secession from the United Kingdom and union with Ireland, won elections to the Assembly, a regional parliament, for the first time in history. This was reported by TASS with reference to the results of the vote held on April 5.
So far, 88 of the 90 mandates have been distributed, but Sinn Féin has secured 27 seats in the legislature and has become inaccessible to the rest. Its main competitor, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), lost its majority in the Assembly and managed to get 24 deputies to parliament.
In total, Sinn Féin got 29 percent of the vote as first choice and the DUP 21.3 percent. Thus, the position of prime minister of Northern Ireland will be occupied by the representative of the nationalists Michelle O’Neill, who was previously the deputy head of the region.
The centrist Alliance party has become the third political force in Northern Ireland by number of votes received, it will be represented in the Assembly by 17 deputies.
Earlier, Irish Prime Minister Michol Martin criticized the Sinn Féin party for failing to criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin. In his opinion, the party supports Russia and its president, and also opposes the European Union. The fact that members of the party have not criticized Russia in recent years, the prime minister considers an unusual occurrence.
