Nature: New fast radio bursts found near source FRB 20201124A

Astronomers from Peking University and the National Astronomical Observatory of China have discovered new fast radio bursts using the FAST radio telescope. The discovery is reported in an article published in the journal Nature.

Over the course of observations made in the spring of 2021, the researchers detected 1,863 flashes at the active fast radio burst source FRB 20201124A over 54 days. Magnetars, that is, neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields, are supposed to generate fast radio bursts. However, the origin of the distant radio bursts remains unknown.

The parent source galaxy is a metal-rich barred spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way.
