The next historical and geographical expedition “Remembering the War” began its work in the White Sea. Its organizers are the Russian Geographical Society and the Pueblo del Mar Foundation. The task is to establish coordinates and identify ships and vessels that sank at different times. This applies mainly to the Great Patriotic War.

Route of the “Remember the War” expedition.

The expedition is supported by the Northern Fleet Hydrographic Service; The hydrographic ship “Ivan Korolev” went to sea. And, as the press service of the Northern Fleet reported, experts are examining more than 15 sunken objects.

Some of these boats and vessels have already been identified in previous expeditions. These are the SKR-70 patrol boat, the Lomonosov boat, the Vishera cargo steamer and even the American transport Kentucky. Now participants use modern equipment to identify these sunken objects.

Last season, during a similar expedition, two minesweepers, T-883 and T-889, were found and the site of the sinking of the research vessel Perseus was established. In addition, the sunken Airacobra plane was brought to the surface.

The Northern Fleet actively participates in military-historical work. Sailors have already lifted Sherman tanks and other types of military equipment. All of them were on the American transport “Thomas Donaldson” that sank in the Barents Sea. We also got the American M3 Lee medium tank from World War II.

Currently, the expedition members will dedicate themselves to geophysical research and the study of the bottom topography. Then, from the data obtained, 3D models of objects will be created. And they will appear on the GIS portal “Russia – from sea to sea”.
