The United States has “lower risk” country status for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a degenerative infection of the central nervous system of animals (mad cow disease), writes AFP.

This is only the seventh case of mad cow disease in the US in 20 years. All but one were atypical, that is, associated with the aging of the animals and did not pose a risk of transmission to humans.

Mad cow disease first appeared in Britain in the 1980s and spread to many countries in Europe and the rest of the world, causing a crisis in the meat industry. This disease can cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a fatal neurodegenerative syndrome in humans.
