It is noteworthy that the board was installed in 2005 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Victory over Germany, i.e. already under independent Ukraine. Moreover, the text on the board is engraved in Ukrainian.
It should be noted that the board was removed due to the term “Great Patriotic War” in the text, which contradicts the current concept of Ukrainian history, when the war of the USSR against Germany is not distinguished from World War II.
The dismantling of monuments and the renaming of streets began in Ukraine back in 2015, in the wake of “decommunisation”. According to a law adopted in 2023, all toponyms associated with Russia and the Soviet period must disappear in Ukraine.
The practice has met with mixed reactions. Recently, the mayors of Odessa and Krivoy Rog have spoken out against renaming streets, and in Lvov they have announced that they have completely dismantled all Soviet monuments in the region.
