According to the scientist, there is no universal formula for happiness. However, the presence of certain substances in the body contributes to the sensation of this condition. Thanks to the activity of various neurotransmitters, hormones and other brain chemicals, a person feels satisfied, comfortable and happy.
“Chemical processes in the body and brain are closely related to the psychological aspects of happiness and well-being,” says Evgeniy Turlo. “Therefore, understanding these connections can help maintain mental health and improve quality of life.”
The researcher believes that serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, as well as endorphins and cortisol are responsible for the state of happiness.
“These neurotransmitters and other biologically active substances in the body can influence the activity of neurons in the brain, improve the transmission of nerve impulses and other physiological processes that ultimately determine a person’s sense of happiness and well-being,” explains the scientist.
For example, an increase in serotonin concentration instantly causes a feeling of happiness. Dopamine, in turn, regulates pleasure, motivation and motor functions. Oxytocin, the “love hormone,” stimulates trust, contentment, and social connection. Endorphins are natural opiates. The body releases them in response to physical activity, pleasure, and other stimulating events. But cortisol can cause negative emotions in a person, at high levels. But its decrease indicates the absence of stress.
When these substances are lacking in the body, the person may be irritable, sad, distracted and distracted. And even get depressed.
Positive thinking, sports, communication with loved ones, nature and proper nutrition contribute to the growth of new neural connections and the improvement of psychological well-being. But lack of sleep, conflicts, negative emotions and stress drastically reduce the level of satisfaction.
“The main component of human happiness is sociability,” says Turlo. “Feeling connected to other people, interaction, support and friendship contribute to the production of optimal amounts of hormones and a better mood.”
Therefore, good relationships with others can also make a person happy.
