At the place where the comb was found, archaeologists discovered a layer of Kiev culture dating back to the 5th-2nd centuries BC. Traces of the dwellings of the ancient Slavs were discovered here.

Khotylevo 2 is an Upper Paleolithic site located on the high bank of the Desna River, near the village of the same name. The site belongs to the cultural and historical community of the Eastern Gravettian (a group of Upper Paleolithic monuments found in Central Europe and the East European Plain).

Scientists believe that these places were inhabited 28-20 thousand years ago: mammoths lived here at that time. The finds discovered here belong to different eras, from the Early Paleolithic to Ancient Russia.

The archaeological site was discovered in the late 1960s by Bryansk archaeologist Fyodor Zavernyaev. Among the artifacts found here is a unique 16-centimeter object with a long, narrow body and an asymmetrical pommel, reminiscent of a bone point. It is decorated with ornaments characteristic of the Kostenki archaeological culture. Scientists have found that the artifact was made from the tubular bone of a woolly mammoth.
