Afghan government bans women from going to university

Date: April 19, 2024 Time: 22:23:09

In Afghanistan, women have been prohibited from studying at universities. This decision was made by the ruling Taliban movement (recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia, its activities are prohibited. – Approx. BURO.). This was reported by the Associated Press with reference to the statement of the representative of the Ministry of Higher Education Ziaullah Hashmi.

The decision applies to both public and private universities. The representatives of the universities are ordered to immediately impose a ban and report on it. The decision is effective immediately and will remain in effect until further notice.

Supporters of the Taliban began to impose various restrictions on women and girls, establishing control over the entire territory of Afghanistan in early September 2021. Representatives of the movement explained their actions by the need to create a “proper Islamic environment” in the condition.

Earlier, Timothée Chalamet and Haider Ackermann released hoodies in support of women in Afghanistan. Proceeds from sales will go to Free Afghanistan. Read more here.
