Amazon employees stand up against closing Martorelles

Date: May 31, 2023 Time: 10:41:20

The Amazon plant in Martorelles is scheduled to close on April 22. Given this situation, in an assembly held this Sunday, the workers have agreed to begin mobilizing against the decision of the electronic commerce giant. This meeting took place in order to achieve the best possible conditions for the 800 employees of the logistics center located in this town in the province of Barcelona.

Union sources consulted by Efe have explained that, although the committee was going with the idea of proposing a strike starting on January 31, in the end there has not been enough time in the assembly to discuss the specific protest actions, and the workers have delegated to the works council both the calendar and the type of actions and mobilizations against the closure.

However, the committee has asked the staff to gather on Wednesday at the gates of the center, before the meeting scheduled for that day between both parties. In any case, the option of going on strike remains completely open, these sources have insisted, who have recorded, however, that the relevant communication must be made to the labor authority.

The assembly this Sunday, held in the Martorelles municipal pavilion, has served to analyze the situation of the workforce. According to these sources, Amazon offers a single payment of 3,000 gross euros to those workers who agree to move to the new logistics center that opens in Zaragoza and 1,500 gross euros to those who agree to move to the center that opens in Figueres (Girona).

As for employees who do not accept the transfer, Amazon proposes the legal minimum, that is, compensation of 20 days per year worked with a maximum of twelve months.

Amazon maintains that its closure and the transfer of the activity to Zaragoza is marked by its desire to adjust the network to its needs and to advance in “improving the experience of our employees and customers.” Currently, Amazon has more than 7,000 workers in Catalonia, 3,000 of them at its center in El Prat, the largest in Spain.
