American lost a priceless work of art, bought for pennies

The 2,000-year-old artifact was included in the exhibition at Pompeii House, the Bavarian king’s villa in Aschaffenburg, Germany, but disappeared during World War II.

American Laura Young from Austin Texas has refused to pursue legal litigation. For four years she tried to prove that she was the legitimate buyer of the ancient bust.

Yang bought the sculpture at a thrift store. A male head made of marble sold for $34.99 (about 2,000 rubles).

The woman was sure that her purchase did not represent any historical value. But then it turned out that the bust is a sculptural portrait of Drusus Germanicus by an ancient Roman master.

The 2,000-year-old artifact was included in the exhibition at Pompeii House, the Bavarian king’s villa in Aschaffenburg, Germany, but disappeared during World War II. It is assumed that he was kidnapped and smuggled into the United States by an American officer who liberated Europe from the Nazis.

Young insisted that she was a reputable buyer, but the lawyers convinced her not to challenge the provisions of international law and recommended that she agree to the voluntary return of the bust to Germany, since it was criminally stolen.

Terms of the agreement reached were not disclosed. It is only known that within the next year the bust will be exhibited in the museums of the cities of San Antonio and San Diego, after which it will be returned to Germany. The estimate of the artifact is also unknown, but journalists who turned to antiquarians were able to name an approximate price – it is $3 million.

The now-former owner said she named the statue Dennis Reynolds, after the character on the sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

– The male head made of marble seemed to me just as cold, distant and insensitive. Exactly, exactly like Dennis Reynolds, Yang shared his impressions. And she also became a source of many problems.
