“We are going to create a mobile Antarctic correspondent from the Télam agency, because for Argentina it is important to know the news from our Antarctica,” said Fernández in his speech from the Antarctic station open all year round Marambio, where he arrived in honor. of the local festivity, Argentine Antarctic Day.
As explained by the agency, for the opening of this office, Télam signed a cooperation agreement with the National Antarctic Administration and the Joint Antarctic Command of the Ministry of Defense. Thanks to this, the agency will be able to ensure the presence of “at least one journalistic group south of the 60th parallel.” The agreement establishes that the journalists will be able to work in the region during the summer, “as long as the logistical, budgetary and meteorological possibilities allow it.” In addition, the agency will provide free access to its news service in all Argentine Antarctic bases.
For Fernández, this trip to Antarctica is also political, given that presidential elections will be held in Argentina in October of this year. During his stay in Marambio, he especially highlighted the fact that he was the first Argentine president to visit the continent in twenty years. “Only four presidents have visited Antarctica. I am the first to do so in more than twenty years and a deep emotion overwhelms me on this occasion”, said Alberto Fernández.
