Baiaja is a master of national rural prose, he was particularly successful in metaphorical depictions of Moravian village life in the 1970s.

Antonin Baiaja was born on May 30, 1942 in Zlín, Moravia, into a family of doctors. After graduating from the Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno, in 1965-1973 he worked as a livestock specialist in one of the agricultural companies in the Zlín region and was director of an agricultural laboratory.
He published his first novel in 1982. In the 1990s he worked as an editor for Czechoslovak Radio, Prostor newspaper, Týden magazine and taught at Tomas Bata University in Zlín. Bajaja was a member of the Czech Television Council, co-founder of the social and cultural magazine Zvuk and a member of the Czech PEN Club.
