Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 19:59:20

During the presentation of the results of Balèaria, its president Adolfo Utor has assured that the company is “positioned” in case the Canarian shipping company Armas goes on sale: “We are very pending”, Utor highlighted. “It is true that the current owners do not have a vocation to belong” and that is why they are “on the starting grid” and there were contacts. However, he has also stressed that his priority is to continue acquiring ships and to continue increasing routes, “which does not mean that if they get within range”, Baleària will “be there”.

The Alicante shipping company has transported 4,770,000 passengers, 1,211,000 vehicles and 7,037,000 linear meters of cargo in 2022, figures that have allowed its turnover to increase by 42% compared to 2021. These amounts represent “the best result in history of the shipping company, which will be 25 years old in 2023”.

The president of the shipping company, Adolfo Utor, -who has presented the 2022 Sustainability Report at a press conference- has highlighted that “historic revenues of 563 million euros have been obtained”. “Efficient management of spending and an adequate capacity to adapt to a volatile environment have been the keys, as well as the correct decisions made previously in the fuel derivatives market”, he pointed out.

With a fleet of 34 ships operating 25 routes in six countries, in 2022 Baleària established itself as the leading shipping company in Spain. In terms of passengers, it transported 64% more than in 2021 and this area came to account for almost 60% of the company’s turnover. The routes with the Balearic Islands maintained high occupancy, while the opening of the borders with Morocco and Algeria implied a high demand, which in turn had a positive influence on traffic with Ceuta and Melilla.

Likewise, the reactivation of international routes allowed 19% of Baleària passengers to come from these. “It has been a record year for Baleària; the opening of the borders in May was a boost to a year that was already being good”, pointed out Utor. In terms of freight transport, Baleària grew 6% on all its routes and reaffirmed its leadership in the Balearic Islands, where it continues to be the only shipping company that covers all inter-island routes with daily services.

To strengthen the transport of goods with North Africa, the maritime company opened a new route between Motril and Tangier. On the other hand, it consolidated its growth in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, as well as in the Canary Islands, where it increased weekly departures from two to three. The transport of goods on international routes accounted for 24% of the global shipping company.

Investments

The company invested 61 million euros, mainly for the fleet. On the one hand, it launched the first electric ferry in Spain, the Cap de Barbaria, which will begin to operate this summer with zero emissions when approaching and staying in port. On the other, construction of the Margarita Salas fast ferry began, with greater power and efficiency than its predecessor, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the retrofit of the Hedy Lamarr ferry was completed.

These ships are equipped with dual engines, which use different fuels. The loyalty rate, both in passengers and cargo customers, was around 95%, according to Baleària. Balearia has also invested almost half a million euros in the training of its collaborators. In the case of women on the workforce, they have suspected 36%.

Among other data, it is worth noting that the company’s social cash flow stood at 697 million euros. 78% of the suppliers are local and more than 20,000 people have enjoyed the exhibitions programmed by the Baleària Foundation. The entity carried out more than 400 actions and collaborations, among which is the management of the travel and accommodation of 25 refugee relatives of Ukrainian crew members, the internal campaign to collect basic necessities and the free transport of more than 150 refugees and
