Big banks will exchange payment services

Date: September 19, 2024 Time: 22:59:47

Large banks will exchange payment services. This could help test approaches to create an alternative payment system. Vice President and Deputy Director of the Tinkoff Payment Systems Department Sergei Khromov spoke about this in an interview with Kommersant.

– Today, in stores that accept payments using Sber QR codes, payment is available through Tinkoff Pay and Alfa Pay. Consequently, in the near future our terminals will also have the ability to pay through Tinkoff Pay, as well as other services: SberPay and Alfa Pay. We hope that other banks will take similar measures,” said Sergei Khromov.

He recalled that with the departure of the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard, there was practically only one payment system left in Russia: the National Payment Card System (NSCP), which is both Mir and SBP. Its market share exceeded 50% by the end of 2023 and will exceed 70% by the end of the year. However, according to the big banks, competition is important here, as elsewhere, and several payment systems are better than one.

“It is also about the security of the country’s payment infrastructure, when, as the proverb says, not all eggs are in one basket,” said Sergei Khromov.

According to him, banks do not ask the authorities for money to create an alternative payment system and intend to act gradually, testing different options.

According to Sergei Khromov, the alternative payment system can be open: anyone can connect to it, including the markets Wildberries, Ozon and Yandex, which have already bought their own banks. At the same time, the payment system must have its own rules and standards that all participants must comply with. These standards have not yet been developed.
