“The federal government does not support Russian LNG purchases,” Germany’s Deputy Energy Minister Patrick Greichen wrote in response to questions from conservative opposition lawmakers, adding that the German cabinet had informed the companies that it would take appropriate steps to exclude purchases of Russian LNG if possible. A representative of the economy ministry, which is also responsible for energy, declined to comment on the document and what specific measures the government is taking.

According to the German lobby group Zukunft Gas, countries including France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain continue to accept supplies of Russian LNG, which currently accounts for about 6 percent of the continent’s gas imports.

Meanwhile, the German government last week forecast the country’s economy to grow 0.2 percent in 2023, compared with a previous forecast for a 0.4 percent contraction. German Finance Minister Robert Habeck continued to warn of a possible recession and that its crisis, which began last year, was not over yet.
