From March 13 to 23, the two allies will conduct the Freedom Shield exercise, which “strengthens the joint defense posture against the North Korean nuclear and missile threat,” the US and South Korean military said in a communicated on Friday.
It should be noted that the exercise will include large-scale joint open-air exercises, including joint landing exercises, and will reflect the “altered security conditions” as a result of the DPRK’s advances in its nuclear and missile capabilities.
Earlier, Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, threatened retaliation in a speech to the ruling party in response to joint US-South Korean exercises. She noted that the DPRK could start testing its warhead designs to withstand the high temperatures of re-entry.
