EU authorities have officially allowed the use of brownie crickets and buffalo worms in cooking; now these insects are considered safe and can be used without restriction.
Therefore, the list of insects allowed to eat has doubled; previously, the use of yellow mealworms and migratory locusts was considered acceptable.
– European Commission approved buffalo crickets and worms can now be used frozen, paste, dried and powdered for food production. For example, cereals, protein bars, meat substitutes, as well as cakes and other flour products, said the press service of the European Food Safety Authority.
From now on, if you don’t itch to eat bugs, you’ll have to study food labels very carefully. In addition, we advise you to remember the Latin names for “delicacy”: Alphitobius diaperinus (buffalo worms) and Acheta domesticus (household cricket), which can be found among common food ingredients, for example, in the form of “finely “. ground powder”.
The main question that arises after such news is why is all this needed?
Turns out it’s all about money. So, for the production of one kilogram of beef, about 8 kilograms of feed will be required, and for the production of one kilogram of “sverzhina” – only two. The benefit is there. But consumers will, of course, be informed about the fight against greenhouse gases and global warming.
