Bono and the Edge Met With Zelensky and Sing in the Kyiv Subway

Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 12:32:10

One of the most popular musicians of modern times, Bono and The Edge, surprised Kyiv on Sunday with an impromptu concert at a subway station.

Irish musician and activist Bono wanted to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people in this way: “Let’s all still pray for you that peace may soon be achieved,” he said.

The station that is currently known as the Khreschatyk metro station has been host to many top musicians and celebrity events. As soon as the citizens of Ukraine became aware of the Russian invasion that shook their country on February 24, they fled to this station.

Music fans celebrated Bono’s performance in Kyiv by posting videos and photos on their social networks. Bono also performed other songs like “Stand By Me,” dedicated to soldiers who fight for their country, as well as the anti-war anthem “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” He honored the late Billie Holiday with a song called “Angel of Harlem.”

The people of Ukraine aren’t just fighting for their own freedom, but also for the freedom of others around the world. This was something that Irish singer Sinead O’Connor shared during her appearance on a news show in Kyiv.

Vernon Bono, no stranger to professional causes or charitable contributions, has arrived unannounced in Ukraine. In the midst of the country’s civil unrest, the U2 frontman was performing with local musicians on a stage erected in Kyiv’s Independence Square.

Visit Bucha, Irpin, and Borodyanka

On the day of the anniversary of Victory Day, Bono and The Edge visited destroyed and battle-scarred cities, towns, and villages in eastern Ukraine that were attacked by Russian forces. They also visited the mass grave of Bucha, a symbol of the atrocities committed by Russia during its occupation.

Just a month after the release of his song “Walk on Ukraine,” Bono went to the areas most affected by Russian invasions. He was asked to check in with President Zelenski, whom he would see later.

In the bombed-out Borodyanka, after reading a poem next to the statue of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, he expressed his hope that Russians will change and oust Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky asked Andrey Yanuik to be present on Victory Day against Nazism. The country celebrates the day one day before Russia and the rest of the former Soviet republics.

One Man’s War

“The Russians were calling Victory Day on Sunday, so this is how we’re celebrating” remarked Bono during an interview as he denounced the war in Ukraine and denounced Putin.

The Edge, the guitarist of his band, went with him to Borodyanka and declared that the Russians attack poets. “That means they’re afraid of art,” he said to the reporters.

Authorities from the three municipalities in Ukraine explained to them the atrocities that the Russian occupiers have carried out in those areas. As for life in Ukraine, it gradually returns amid a landscape of destruction.

When Bono visited Bucha and met with a priest who explained the processes of exhumating and identifying corpses, he was interested in how the Russian Church could justify such destruction to its faithful.

U2 singer Bono performed at a Tibetan temple and said he felt calm, collected, and at peace while visiting the sacred grounds.

Walk on Ukraine is an empowering and politically-charged song that calls on the international community to support Ukrainians in their fight for freedom.
