Broken Kurt Cobain guitar auctioned for $600,000

Date: April 12, 2024 Time: 18:34:35

Kurt Cobain’s wrecked Fender Stratocaster sold at auction for $596,000. The instrument was broken into pieces “during the ‘Nevermind’ album era” and reassembled, but is unplayable. This was announced by Julien’s auction house.

“When Kurt Cobain was on stage, when he played, he was a machine. You could feel all the rage from him on stage. Including the way he handled his tools. In a way, this is a broken instrument of a broken musician that really defined this era of loud and tumultuous music,” an auction house spokesperson said.

This guitar was signed by Cobain and the members of Nirvana as a gift to frequent collaborator Mark Lanegan of the grunge band Screaming Trees. Cobain gave this guitar to Lanegan in the fall of 1992 during the Nevermind tour. Before Cobain’s death, the musicians often collaborated: Cobain sang “Down in the Dark” and played guitar on “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” from Lanegan’s solo album The Winding Sheet (1990), while Lanegan wrote the lyrics from “Something in the Camino” to “It Doesn’t Matter”.

Initially, Julien’s Auctions planned to get $60,000 for it. But during the auction, the price increased almost 10 times.

Courtney Love previously called Kurt Cobain and Lana Del Rey the only “true geniuses” of their time. The singer also talked about the upcoming album. We talk about it in more detail here.
