Calviño will maintain the VAT reduction on food if prices remain high

Date: March 2, 2024 Time: 06:48:34

The First Vice President of the Spanish Government, Nadia Calviño, assured this Friday in New York that the Executive intends to maintain the VAT reduction in the price of food beyond June 30 if prices remain high “given the influence of these prices on the pockets of Spanish families”.

The vice president, who traveled to New York to receive an award from the Foreign Policy Association, said that the government’s priority continues to be the moderation of inflation, and welcomed the fact that energy prices, for example, have recovered pre-pandemic levels.

But with regard to the drop in VAT on food (between 0 and 4% since January this year, a measure in force for six months in principle), he maintained that “it will be maintained as long as we do not have an adequate price level in this scope, given the influence of these prices on the pockets of families.”

With respect to the award received yesterday, Calviño missed it as a recognition “of the important and growing role of our country in European and international politics, and the prestige and respect that Spain and its Government have”, and that, according to her, she has confirmed recently in his meetings with investors.

“The economic policy (of the Government) works and is allowing our economy to have records of growth, lower inflation and job creation that contrasts with the rest of the European economies and demonstrates the strength and resilience of our economy”, I underline.
