Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced on December 19 that Canada would seize $26 million from Granite Capital Holdings Ltd, owned by Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch under sanctions under [положениями канадского закона] on Special Economic Measures (Russia), and will seek forfeiture [этой суммы]”says the statement.
Canada became the first G7 country to decide to apply such measures. It is also the first time in Canadian history that it has used such powers.
Foreign Minister Jolie will now consider filing a lawsuit for the forfeiture of assets in favor of the state, and in case of a positive decision, the proceeds “can be used to restore Ukraine.”
