Cepsa will reuse wastewater in the largest hydrogen project in Europe

Date: March 28, 2024 Time: 20:17:19

Cepsa will use its recycled water industrial facilities to produce green hydrogen. This has been confirmed by the company, after reaching an agreement with the public company of Aguas y Servicios del Campo de Gibraltar (Arcgisa). The company assures that the “Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley” will be the “largest green hydrogen project in Europe” and will have an investment of 3,000 million euros.

In addition, to generate the renewable electricity necessary to produce this green hydrogen, Cepsa will develop a portfolio of 3 gigawatt wind and solar energy projects, which will entail an additional investment of 2,000 million euros. Likewise, it will collaborate with other renewable energy producers in Andalusia and the rest of Spain to promote the integration of these new plants into the electricity system.

This project is part of Cepsa’s 2030 strategic plan, with which it seeks to turn Spain into an “energy power” and contribute to Europe’s energy independence. In this sense, the company will build two plants for the production of green hydrogen with a total capacity of two gigawatts in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) and in San Roque (Cádiz).

It will save 4.2 million cubic meters

The industrial use of urban water can reduce drinking water consumption by 5%, according to the European Union. Cepsa, in line with its environmental commitment, plans to reduce the withdrawal of fresh water by 20% in areas of water stress in 2025, compared to 2019 levels. This decision will mean a saving of more than three million cubic meters of fresh water by year

The new treatment plant will have tertiary treatment for wastewater that will result in savings of 4.2 million cubic meters per year that will no longer be discharged into the sea, but will be reused by Cepsa at its facilities. This figure is equivalent to the water consumption of more than 21,000 average households, with four people, during one year. During the presentation of this agreement, the director of the San Roque Energy Park, Rosero Rivero, highlighted Cepsa’s commitment to reduce its environmental footprint and decarbonise its activity and that of its customers.

For her part, Cepsa’s Director of Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality, Mar Perrote, pointed out that the company is going to “join” all its technological and innovative potential to seek a second life for urban waste in the region, facilitating the transition from a linear model to a management model based on circularity”.
