Ceuta parties protest the cessation of train service between Algeciras and Madrid

Date: July 18, 2024 Time: 05:26:15

Several political parties and associations in Ceuta have been unhappy with the decision to suspend the train line between the city of Algeciras (Cádiz) and Madrid. Renfe has reported through a statement that the cessation of services on this route will take place on May 5.

The Movement for Dignity and Citizenship (MDyC), a political group that has three seats in the Ceuta Assembly, has assured that it has already contacted the mayor of Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce, to communicate its disagreement with to the suspension and their concern about its possible consequences.

MDyC points out in a statement that the stoppage of this line is “unacceptable”, since the operator has not offered an alternative for this land transport route and has not specified “how long it will be inoperative.” Landaluce has also recognized that the decision “affects the people of Ceuta even more than the people of Algeciras”, according to the text.

Furthermore, he specified that the problem with the line does not end in Algeciras, but rather affects the citizens of Ceuta. “We cannot be subjected to double isolation,” said the group, which has criticized that the line in itself is “insufficient and unpunctual.”

The MDyC has denounced the “poor management” that is being done of a line as crucial for the autonomous city as this one, in addition to the state in which the railway is located. “Every time there is work, the line is suspended and the trains suffer failures almost daily, causing delays that seriously affect the people of Ceuta who have to get to the autonomous city by boat,” he warned.

He has also demanded that the Government of the Nation not leave the autonomous city “helpless” and that it establish a greater commitment “so that the supposed means of communication stop being a continuous obstacle.”
