Offered by Telefónica’s Best Connected

The athlete Chema Martínez continues to live through his passion in his more than 50 years. Despite his age, the athlete has known how to reinvent himself and has found that motivation to do what he likes the most: running. With desire, effort, honesty and learning, he has maintained the link with this discipline and recognizes that anticipating events and taking risks has served him to obtain a great reward.

“In this life there are no secrets to achieve the objectives that you set for yourself, there is only work,” he points out in an interview for Mejores Conectados, a Telefónica initiative. But he points out that, before proposing a goal, you have to be honest with yourself and know your limitations. “I think that the motivation starts first by being realistic with your situation and seeing what you can be capable of or how far you can go; assuming it,” he defends. “We are all open to trying to be better people and that desire to always be our best version belongs to each one of us,” he celebrates.

To achieve this, he stresses that high doses of work, attitude and training are needed, as well as being connected with the world around us. When his environment raised the possibility of his withdrawal and he had not even considered such a situation, he launched an action plan and began to prepare for the race of life.

“If you don’t prepare for that moment that is going to arrive sooner or later, it becomes a blow for athletes. You have to start doing things now and not let the moment arrive. You have to be the one who anticipates it” , warn. For this reason, Chema Martínez graduated from the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (INEF) and studied several master’s degrees and courses related to sport and its management. “It’s important to adapt and keep learning,” he declares.

“In the end, we are not only prepared to do one thing. We cannot have only one vital objective in life,” he highlights. “There are many more alternatives and we have to bet on them. We have to take risks. We have to be a bit daring,” he encourages, while we admit that all this can cause a certain vertigo and even slow us down.

reinvent yourself to stay motivated

“I think I reinvent myself because I want to continue living,” he says. Thanks to his spirit of constant improvement and his ability to adapt, one of the most recognized long-distance runners in the history of the sport has been able to add new decorations, qualifications and apprenticeships. “Assuming certain risks in life will give us the possibility of being able to achieve these new challenges”, he affirms. From his own experience, he recounts how he recently faced a race in the snow, something totally unprecedented in his professional career and through which he obtained a new medal and competed again with the Spanish National Team.

Chema Martínez became an elite athlete at the age of 20 and, in his long list of victories, the two 10,000-meter gold and silver medals in the 2002 championships in Munich and 2006 in Gothenburg stand out, as well as a third in the marathon test of the Europeans of Barcelona 2010 with silver qualification. In addition, she has also appeared in three Olympic Games: Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and Berlin 2009.

“It is important to connect with people who live what you do in a different way”

This series of recognitions shows that not settling and trying to always give the best of yourself can bring great benefits. But how to reinvent yourself and get out of your comfort zone? According to the interviewee, it is important to adapt to change without losing connection with the world around you and with the purpose of wanting to continue learning.

“To be the protagonist of your life, you cannot lose connection with the world,” he insists, stressing that learning from others helps us to change and, consequently, to evolve. As an example, she says that training with non-professional athletes helped her manage problems with a different approach. “When I had a bad result, that little phrase of encouragement from another point of view touched me in such a way that it made me change the angle of vision. I turned a bad moment into a learning experience,” she thanks.

I learned that there are many ways to achieve a goal and that they are all”, he highlights.
