A Cessna 206 crashed in the Colombian jungle on May 1.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro spoke of “joy for the country” after four children were found alive 16 days after a plane crash in the jungle. However, the military, which is engaged in the search for children, has not yet been able to confirm this information.
“After an intense search carried out by our armed forces, we have found four children alive who disappeared in a plane crash in Guaviar. Joy for the country, ”Petro wrote on his Twitter profile.
Colombian journalist César Chaparro said that “a local resident reported through a radio operator that he had found several children in their boat on the shore.” The boatman assured that they were the children who had suffered a plane crash at the beginning of the month.
A Cessna 206 crashed in the jungle on May 1, but what caused the crash is still unknown. The pilot informed controllers of the engine problem minutes before the aircraft disappeared from radar.

The military could only reach the crash site two weeks later. They found the wrecked plane and the bodies of three adults: the pilot and two passengers, including the mother of four children ages 4, 9 and 13, and an 11-month-old baby, who were also on the plane. But the children themselves were neither in the cabin nor in the disaster zone. According to preliminary information from the Civil Aviation Administration, they got off the plane and entered the jungle.
Planes and helicopters of the Colombian Air Force participate in the search and rescue operation. With the support of search dogs, the army has previously found discarded fruit believed to have been eaten by children, as well as makeshift shelters made from twigs.
The Bogota station Bluradio contacted the press and information office of Gustavo Petro to clarify the situation. They said the president made the announcement about the discovery of the children, based solely on information from the Columbia Institute for Family Well-being.
Colombian authorities involved the military in a large-scale rescue operation.
“The institute ensures that the children were in good health and only had a few scratches. A rescue team rushed to the scene,” the presidential administration said in a press release.
In order to eliminate the misunderstanding that has arisen, the official representative of the institute itself also made a short speech. He noted that the organization received a tip about the finding of the children, but no actual contact with him has yet been made “due to difficult weather conditions and difficult terrain.” For this reason, the military has not yet confirmed the authenticity of the president’s tweet.
