In China, an undeveloped embryo was found in a newborn
A newborn baby has died in China after her twin sister’s undeveloped embryo was found in her head, the Daily Mail writes.
Some developmental abnormalities were discovered by doctors during routine examinations of a pregnant woman and her fetus; at 33 weeks of pregnancy, the head of the child, who was born by Caesarean section a month later, was larger than normal.
Immediately after birth, the girl began to experience serious health problems; her development was different from normal; for example, she never learned to hold her head up on her own.
A year later, the girl died: a body scan showed that a large tumor with fragments of bone tissue had developed in her head all this time. It was decided to remove the tumor, but after the surgery the child died.
Histological examination of the tumor confirmed that it was an undeveloped human embryo, in this case from a twin sister, a rare anomaly (one case in 500,000 pregnancies) called “embryo in an embryo.” For the young Chinese woman, this anomaly proved fatal, as her brain was severely damaged.
