The new Riga Theater canceled the performance with Chulpan Khamatova with the phrase “creative failure”

Chulpan Khamatova could never be yours in Latvia. In Riga, the performance with the participation of the actress was canceled at the last moment. She was supposed to act in Latvian in a production based on Gogol’s story “Landowners of the Old World.” But there was a creative failure.
Chulpan Khamatova was preparing to appear on the stage of the New Riga Theater in a new role. But the organizers canceled the performance with her participation the day before the premiere. They announced that the long-awaited premiere with a Russian woman who would speak Latvian from the stage would not take place. The February 27 dress rehearsal and February 28 premiere, as well as performances that were supposed to take place in March and early April, have been cancelled.
“It just didn’t work this time. A creative failure. In the theater (as in life), sometimes this happens,” explained the director of the cultural institution.
One can only guess at the true reasons for the drastically changed plans. For the New Riga Theater, the situation with the cancellation of the performance is unprecedented. The history of a cultural institution knows many problematic performances. But the premieres have not been canceled before.
The public is inclined to believe that Khamatova’s situation turned out to be hopeless. Like, the actress who escaped from Russia became an outcast in a foreign country. But to prepare for this role, the mother of many children turned down all offers from her to fully dedicate herself to her upcoming debut.
At the beginning of 2023, attentive fans noticed another point. All information about Khamatova’s major international awards has disappeared from the New Riga Theater website.
Earlier, the artist said that she wants to quit acting to devote more time to charity. According to her confession, going on stage in front of the public is a torment for her every time. “I always think:” Why did I choose this profession?
