Chulpan Khamatova, 47, is looking for new ways to earn money. A year and a half ago, the artist moved to Latvia as a permanent residence. Khamatova bought a house there nine years ago and received a residence permit in Latvia. The star of the theater and cinema took her daughters with her to a foreign country: 21-year-old Arina, 19-year-old Asya, 11-year-old Iya. During this time, the artist lost her former popularity and huge profits. She was promised a job for Russophobic statements, but her breakthroughs turned out to be one-off PR campaigns. Now Khamatova has a problem with a paid job.
Housing near Khamatova is located in an ecological village 80 km from Riga: a wooden house with an area of 200 square meters stands on a plot of 50 acres. A year ago, the artist was hired by the troupe of the New Riga Theater: with one but: the salary is paid only in fees for each staged performance. But you can count them on the fingers of your hand. True, a performance with the participation of Chulpan Khamatova was removed from the repertoire before the premiere in the spring with the text: “Creative failure.” Khamatova for the sake of this “Gogolis” (based on Gogol’s story “Landowners of the Old World”) intensively studied Latvian and Ukrainian every day. In an interview, he said that he had learned Latvian, although many people laugh at this statement. The artistic director of the theater saw the tour and canceled the performance, people got their money back for the tickets. The only performance with the participation of Khamatova is Postscript. The solo performance for the next three months is announced on the bill once, when other productions have a tight schedule.
In Latvia, films and series with a decent budget (to which the artist was used to before) are not shot. While Chulpan Khamatova managed to star in the dubious English comedy “To the West!” (“Go West!”), by Latvian director Alexander Khan. According to the plot: in 1976, the Russian Myshkins couple decide to emigrate to the United States and show ingenuity for this. Khamatova plays the main female role – she is Myshkina. Chulpan Khamatova is also busy in the new movie by Kirill Serebryannikov, which he is also shooting in Latvia. The actress got an agent in America and Europe in the hope of film projects with a good budget. But they are not.
Therefore, Chulpan Khamatova has to earn money by touring the small halls of European cities, where for many years there has also been a small Russian-speaking population. Such trips are now Khamatova’s main source of income. The artist came up with a performance that does not require large investments: Khamatova only reads poetry. The artist called the performance – a musical and poetic performance “Dreams about the piano.” She reads Mandelstam, Pasternak, Okudzhava, Tsvetaeva and other works accompanied by the Latvian pianist Andreas Osokin. Very similar to amateur art. The next tour in three months in Germany – tickets are still poorly sold – prices from 29 (3 thousand rubles) to 109 (11 thousand rubles) euros. The halls are filled with no more than 400 – 500 people.
Chulpan Khamatova earned a lot of money in Russia – he received from 130 to 260 thousand rubles for the performance. And she had several performances in a week, since she performed in two theaters. Now, in six months, the artist has as many functions as she used to have in a month.
