CNN announces the dismissal of a hundred employees – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 18, 2024 Time: 13:07:22

CNN, known for revolutionizing continuous news reporting, plans to merge its three newsrooms, which aggregate news in the United States and abroad, into a single editorial department. As a result, the television channel plans to cut around 100 jobs. In total, the company currently employs around 3,500 people worldwide, the Belga news agency reports.

CNN CEO Mark Thompson also hopes to generate significant revenue from the new app as fewer Americans watch cable TV. CNN’s US audience figures have recently fallen below those of rivals Fox News and MSNBC.

The channel had already launched a paid streaming service called CNN+ in 2022. However, a month later it was closed at a loss and collapsed, as it no longer fit into the merger plans of WarnerMedia (CNN, HBO Max) and Discovery. A year later, CNN CEO Chris Licht resigned due to internal problems and was replaced by British Mark Thompson, former editor of the BBC (the resource is blocked in the Russian Federation) and the New York Times.

The announcement of the layoffs comes as CNN hopes to regain viewership thanks to the US presidential election. The channel once again managed to outdo its competitors Fox News and MSNBC by hosting the first debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump on June 27. The second and final debate between the two rivals is scheduled to air on ABC on September 10.
