Composer Eduard Artemyev died

Soviet and Russian composer Eduard Artemyev has died at the age of 85. This was reported to TASS by his son Artemy Artemyev.

Artemiev died in intensive care, where he was transferred due to complications that arose during treatment for bacterial pneumonia. The composer was hospitalized in early December due to the coronavirus.

Artemiev is best known as the composer of film scores. He made his debut in this role in 1963. The first picture of him was “Towards a Dream” by Otar Koberidze and Mikhail Karyukov.

Artemiev also wrote music for the films by Andrei Tarkovsky (Solaris, The Mirror and Stalker), Nikita Mikhalkov (Among Strangers, A Stranger Among Friends, Relatives, Burnt by the Sun, The Barber of Siberia) and Andrei Konchalovsky (“Siberiade”, “Homer and Eddie”, “Odyssey” and “House of Fools”).

The composer received many Soviet and Russian awards: in 1988 he became the laureate of the RSFSR State Prize, in 1999 he received the title of People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, in 2022 – Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation. He is also a four-time winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation and winner of four Nika Awards for Best Film Score.
