The United States imports millions of American flags from abroad, mostly from China. The authors of the proposal believe that the time has come to use state symbols produced in the country they represent.
The legislation’s sponsors, led by Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and her Democratic colleague Sherrod Brown of Ohio, said the change is more than just symbolic. They believe it will create jobs and support American manufacturers.
Under current rules, the government must purchase flags that are made from half of American-made materials.
