“BOX”, 2017-2018
ALEXANDRA MITLYANSKAYA
The video installation “The Box” immerses the viewer in a meditative trance, where time is measured by the movement of the heroine’s hands on the screen. The artist’s mother slowly and carefully sorts through the jewelry. Viewers do not have the opportunity to see the woman’s facial expressions, which forces them to look deeper into the frame, trying to capture emotions through the movements of her hands. The flow of time, like beads, slips through your fingers and disappears into the box.
“RECIT OF THE SITE (PROLOGUE)”, 1989
GARY HILL
The work is full of details that need to be explored and noticed at each new viewing, following the artist’s wandering gaze. A scene unfolds before the viewer that at first glance looks like a misty landscape. In fact, this “landscape” is made up of strange collectible objects. The viewer seems to find himself in the office of an enthusiastic collector or in a vanitas painting: among pieces of bark, bone fragments, shells, stone fragments, dried insects, nutshells and crumpled pieces of paper.
“CARPET”, 2006
TAUS MAKHACHEV
One of the artist’s earliest works, in which the artist repeatedly wraps herself in a traditional Dagestan carpet – a kilim – and turns around. The simple-made video conceals a duality of meanings: on the one hand, the carpet, being an object of folk craftsmanship, emphasizes the artist’s connection with her roots, on the other hand, Makhacheva’s rehearsal action of “freeing” herself from it may indicate a desire to break away from the shackles of tradition and break ties with the past. At the same time, throughout the entire video the artist does not leave the kilim, making it the semantic center of the work. The camera either zooms in, allowing you to see all the ornamental details, or zooms out so that the viewer can see the entire object.
“MAGIC MOUNTAIN”, 1985-2017
MARIANNE HESKE
Landscapes, like a kaleidoscope, either fragment or form a single image, depending on the viewer’s view. With this video painting, the artist invites us to take a closer look at what surrounds us, at nature. She shifts the focus from recognizable views to complex, multi-colored landscapes. Through unusual color composition and frame changes, Heske captures the attention, allowing the viewer to reconstruct a complete landscape, like a puzzle.
“UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS”, 2009
ALEXANDRA DEMENTIEVA
In the artist’s interactive installation, the viewer will be able to “start” time in the frame, and it will literally become the main guide to the meaning of the work. The fragments of colored glass from which the stained glass canvas is “woven” form a coherent narrative, and color and light transform the perception of religious themes into a complex act of contemplation. The fact is that previously, rays of light from temple windows had the meaning of some kind of visible sign of the presence of the divine essence, and the stained glass window played the role of an intermediary between the visible earthly and the invisible sacred. Alexandra Dementieva transfers these meanings to her work, but the shine becomes digital, and the visual images become mobile and changing.
