27-year-old Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev defeated 20-year-old Dane Holger Rune in the Masters series tournament match in Rome. The final game lasted almost two hours and ended with the score 7:5, 7:5. This was reported by the website of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
For a Russian, this is the first trophy won on clay. In total, he has 20 ATP tournament wins. He has 18 wins on hard surfaces, one on grass. The victory allowed Medvedev to surpass Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic and climb from third to second in the ATP rankings.
The rival Russian Rune rose to the sixth line of the table. The Spanish Carlos Alcaras heads the table. The prize fund of the tournament in Rome amounted to more than 7.7 million dollars (about 666 million rubles). For winning the tournament, Medvedev will receive more than 1.1 million (95 million rubles) in prize money.
