Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen was attacked by a 39-year-old Pole – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 13, 2024 Time: 19:50:42

The 39-year-old Pole, who was detained after allegedly beating the prime minister on Friday night, was remanded in custody until June 20 by court order on Saturday, prosecutor Taruch Sekeroğlu told reporters. Frederiksen, a Social Democrat who has been Denmark’s prime minister since 2019 and was considered a contender for the EU’s top job, was taken to hospital for examination and her official events on Saturday were cancelled, the prime minister’s office said.

Friday’s incident came two days before the European Parliament elections and after several incidents of violence against politicians in Europe, The Guardian reported. In May, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was seriously injured in an attack by a liberal opposition supporter. A member of the European Parliament from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) was run over while putting up posters in Dresden. On Tuesday, a candidate for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was stabbed in the southwestern German city of Mannheim.

European leaders condemned the attack in Denmark. The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, described the incident as “scandalous” and stated that “violence has no place in politics.” Charles Michel, president of the European Council, said he was “outraged” and pointed to the European elections in a social media post on Sunday. The Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament said it supports Frederiksen and the Danish people. “Acts of violence are always an attack on democracy. We will not be intimidated,” the group said.

Frederiksen became Denmark’s youngest prime minister in 2019 and retained the position after winning the 2022 general election.
