Security archaeological excavations in Yakutsk have yielded sensational finds. Nine fragments of birch bark letters from the 17th century were discovered, which were very well preserved thanks to the permafrost.

The find was identified thanks to the professionalism of archaeologist Yulia Baikina.

It has been established that at this place – now here is the intersection of Kalandarishvili Street and Mark Zhirkov Lane – in the 17th century there was a fort, that is, a fortified building or fortress, where the barracks of soldiers and the governor’s office were located, sent to serve in the Far East. Archaeologists note that the fort itself was almost completely destroyed by a fire. Even more surprising are the discovered letters.

They were discovered by a student of archaeology from Kirov, Vitaly Tatarinov, and the find was identified thanks to the professionalism of the archaeologist specializing in orthophotomaps and tacheometry studies, Yulia Baikina.

“This area was very active in different periods. People built the same houses on the sites of the missing, overlapping materials of interest to archaeologists,” he told Vesti.Sakha journalists.

We have already managed to decipher one of the birch bark letters found written in cursive. It speaks of the collection of yasak, that is, a tax levied on the furs of the peoples of Siberia and the North.

Experts hope that all the letters will be preserved and deciphered without losing a word of the historic document.

In total, more than 700 household objects have been found since the start of archaeological excavations in Yakutsk in May this year, spanning the period from the 17th to the 1930s.
