Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White dies at 67

Date: February 5, 2023 Time: 01:43:38

“Our family today is saddened by the loss of an incredible and talented family member,” Verdine White wrote on social media, recalling that he had “a gold record since he was 16 years old.”

On the official Instagram page of the band (banned in the Russian Federation, owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in Russia), a video was posted in which White performs a drum solo at a concert in Germany in 1979. Below the video is titled: “Rest in love”.

Born in 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, Fred White started playing the drums at a very young age, according to AFP. He has won six Grammy Awards in his career with the legendary funk band formed in 1969 by his brother Maurice White, who died in 2016. The group was a huge hit among whites and African-Americans. In 1979, they became the first African-American band to play a sold-out show at New York’s prestigious Madison Square Garden.

As a member of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the American pantheon of rock and popular music. The group stood out for both their songs and their energetic shows, highlighted by the strong presence of wind instruments and the kalimba, an African percussion instrument made of metal bars. Without completely leaving the stage, the band experienced a renaissance in 2009 after the election of US President Barack Obama, who invited them to be the first artists to perform at the White House.
