Date: March 19, 2024 Time: 11:54:22

The current head of state, the Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leads the vote in the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday in Turkey, according to the first results of the vote count. According to the official Anadolu news agency, after the opening of 90% of the polls, Erdogan obtained 52.7% of the votes against 47.3% of his rival, the Social Democrat Kemal Kiliçdaroglu.

Figures released earlier by the same source gave Erdogan a greater lead, which seems to mark a trend towards a closer result between the two candidates. This trend has been reinforced by the results offered by the private agency ANKA, which ranks Kiliçdaroglu in the lead with 50.9% of the votes compared to 49.1% for Erdogan. However, the vote count abroad, which is advancing in parallel, always favors Erdogan, so the victory of the current head of state could be assured.

On May 14, none of the candidates obtained the necessary majority to become head of state in the first round of the presidential elections, which were held together with the legislative ones. That day Erdogan won by touching the absolute majority by obtaining 49.5% of the votes, compared to 44.9 for Kiliçdaroglu, with a participation in the polls of 89% in Turkish territory, and 86% if the more than three million citizens residing abroad.

The polls were open this Sunday for nine hours, between 08:00 and 17:00 local time (05:00 and 14:00 GMT) so that 61 million people could cast their ballots.
