Responding to the question of whether Turkey is willing to abandon the accession process to the European Union, Erdogan noted that Turkey attaches great importance to EU decisions. According to him, if a positive decision is made, Ankara will welcome it.
At the same time, Erdogan recalled that for the last 50 years Turkey has been at the gates of the EU. “We have always been a self-sufficient country. We have never needed nor do we need help or support from the European Union,” said the Turkish leader.
Earlier, Erdogan admitted that Ankara and Brussels could take different paths. According to him, the European Union seeks to break relations with Türkiye. If the EU takes appropriate measures, Ankara will make its own assessment of these developments and then Turkey and the EU can go their separate ways if necessary.
