FC Sochi beat Spartak on Abaskal’s birthday – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 13, 2024 Time: 18:49:25

The RPL matchday 24 program opened with a match in Sochi, where the local club hosted Spartak Moscow. The hosts had not won since October last year and the Sochi team’s last five matches ended in a draw.

The match took place on the birthday of Spartak coach Guillermo Abascal. The Spanish coach, whom the media has been dismissing from the team for some time, turned 35 today.

In the first half the teams played on equal terms, but the hosts made several dangerous shots that were neutralized by Alexander Maksimenko. Spartak responded with a couple of shots that Sochi goalkeeper Nikolai Zabolotny deflected without much difficulty.

After the break, Spartak played a little better, but failed. Substitute Jesús Medina lost the ball and Yahya Attiyat-Allah rolled the ball under Maksimenko from close range.

Finding himself in a difficult situation, Abascal simply had no one to reinforce the attack. Two goalkeepers, five defenders and midfielder Ruslan Litvinov remained in reserve.

“Spartak” made a kind of attack on Zabolotny’s goal, but did not succeed. And the Sochi team could have scored more, but after a powerful shot in the near corner, the crossbar came to the rescue of the Moscow goalkeeper.

The Sochi players won and, with 18 points, moved one point ahead of Baltika, finishing in last place. The team broke a streak of ten games without winning.

It is quite possible that the Spartak management will decide to change the coach.
