Ferrovial wants to build a 195 MW offshore wind farm in the Canary Islands

Date: March 28, 2024 Time: 16:10:53

The Ferrovial company has indicated that it intends to build a new offshore wind farm with 195 megawatts (MW) of power within the waters belonging to the island of Gran Canaria. This project, carried out by the company’s subsidiary, joins three other projects of the same nature that are already in the process of being built in Spain.

The company presented its environmental assessment project on December 16, as recorded in the records of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The construction group, thanks to its subsidiary Ferrovial Infraestructuras Energéticas, has at least four projects of this type, for offshore wind turbines, in the process of being built in Spain.

The first of these projects is the Celta park, with a capacity of 495 MW in the province of Lugo; then there is Celta II, with a 510 MW capacity, as well as its evacuation infrastructure, in Pontevedra; Creus, which in this case belongs to Girona, with 510 MW; and now the one from the Canary Islands, called Bandama.

Those located in Galicia are already in the phase of prior consultations, for which reason the environmental documentation and the list of organizations consulted have already been delivered, while the second two are in an initial phase. In all these cases there is an intention that does not require commitment from either the Administration or the company. They even overlap in location with other projects from other companies.

Therefore, now, we will have to wait for the Maritime Space Management Plans (POEM) to be published so that the installation of these wind farms is then regulated, for which so many expectations are within a company like Ferrovial that wants to continue expanding within This market that generates so many benefits in Spain.
