Finland will not join NATO before Sweden

The Finnish authorities have announced that they will not join NATO before Sweden. RBC writes about this with reference to the statement of the country’s Foreign Minister Pekku Haavisto.

He said his country is in no rush to join the alliance and can wait until Sweden does. “We applied together for NATO membership and we will also complete this process together,” Haavisto promised.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted that the country cannot yet join NATO, as it is not ready to meet all of Turkey’s conditions. Some of them he called impossible.

“Turkey confirms that we have done what we promised to do, but it also says that it wants what we cannot or do not want to give it. Now the decision is up to Turkey,” Kristersson explained.

Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO on May 18. Turkey, already a member of the alliance, said it would agree to expand the bloc if potential members declare Kurdish organizations terrorists and extradite those accused of terrorism and attempted coup in 2016.
