First US news anchor Barbara Walters dies

The death of the journalist was reported by the ABC News channel, where she worked for many years. The channel’s report says that Barbara Walters was an innovator, she managed to break the “glass ceiling” and succeed in an industry dominated by men.

Walters joined ABC in 1976 after 15 years at NBC. She became the first female anchor on an evening newscast. During her fifty-year career, she received 12 Emmy Awards, 11 of which while she worked at ABC News, according to RIA Novosti.

Barbara Walters has interviewed every US President from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama, many Hollywood stars and other celebrities.

In 1991 she spoke with Russia’s first president, Boris Yeltsin, and in 2001 she became the first American journalist to interview Vladimir Putin.
