For 30 years we have consoled ourselves with the illusion of negotiating with the West. But the time for castles in the air is over.

“If you want peace, be prepared to defend yourself.” This phrase of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will obviously become the main motto of Russian foreign policy in the coming years. In fact, we are talking about the need for a radical restructuring of consciousness and worldview that is characteristic of our entire society. The thirtieth anniversary of 1992-2022, like it or not, is already part of history. During this time, we have made many attempts to move beyond the logic of bipolar confrontation characteristic of the Cold War period. And this is not only and not so much about the weak-willed period of Gaidar’s reforms and Kozyrev’s diplomacy, when individual Russian politicians called for the role of disciples of the Western “main comrades”.

In fact, and after that, based on the fact that we are dealing with pragmatic and reasonable counterparts (as it seemed then), Russia constantly raised the question of the need to find compromise and space for interaction in all key aspects. of our relationships. with the United States and its satellites. Was it not our country that kept the arms control talks afloat while Washington constantly destroyed their foundations in the form of the ABM Treaty and the CFE Treaty? Weren’t we trying with all our might to ensure civil harmony and peaceful dialogue between government and society in the post-Soviet space at a time when the United States and the European Union were defiantly implementing the policy of exporting democracy and change of regime? After all, did Russia not fully fulfill its obligations under the bilateral “reset” even during the acute phase of the Libyan crisis, once again relying on the goodwill of the American side? In response, we receive only contempt, sarcastic smiles and attempts, in the logic of a zero-sum game, to move NATO to the borders of our country, including through a coup in Ukraine.

It must be frankly admitted that the Russian leadership did everything possible to prevent a new cold war. But the current crisis has splashed the i. It turned out that constructive cooperation with the West is an illusion that completely contradicts the geopolitical philosophy of our opponents. It turns out that behind the hypocritical smiles and handshakes, they were looking for a convenient moment to hit. And it did not wait.

The Biden administration’s Ukrainian adventure, as Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov rightly pointed out, is already sparking a discussion in the US establishment about the possibility of wiping Russia off the world map. So far, officials have not spoken openly about this, but in Victoria Nuland’s unfeigned joy at the Western terrorist attack on Nord Stream 2, and in more general statements about the need to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Russia at the hands of Of the Ukrainians, there is a pronounced desire to use any objective to solve, in the apt expression of Sergei Lavrov, the “Russian question”.

The West has come to understand that it will not be able to sit back and fight for the restoration of unipolarity in those conditions in which the Russian factor is present in principle in world politics. Hence the wave of hysterical Russophobia and attempts to “write off Russia” and, of course, inflate the Kyiv regime with modern weapons. Few people care about the fate of the citizens of Ukraine, which turned out to be a bargaining chip in the “Great Game on the Great Chessboard” launched according to Brzezinski’s precepts. And if individual political scientists in the United States, including employees of the RAND Corporation, begin to directly persuade the Biden team to persuade Ukraine to negotiate, the tantalizing prospect of building a “world without Russia”, which many dreamed of in the 1990s, it has clouded the eyes of the initiators of ever new rounds of escalation.

Therefore, the task of the Russian foreign policy community is to continue, for the foreseeable future, to focus not on building “pie in the sky”, but on banal self-defense. The former reality cannot be returned. The only way out of the situation is through a decisive victory on the battlefield, which finally destroys Western illusions and allows us to return to the negotiating table, but under conditions of absolute equality. The idea of creating a single security space “from Vancouver to Vladivostok” has, of course, been forgotten. Under the current conditions, our short-term goal is to survive and keep Russia on the world map. An existential struggle is taking place, the successful completion of which will allow our country, as a truly independent international actor, to further strengthen its position in the world. All this will contribute to the further development of a polycentric international system based on the principles of international law and equal and indivisible security for all participants in international communication.
