“Ukrainians with their experience will be able to master the controller itself quickly enough,” he told the NRC newspaper. “However, it will take much longer to learn how to use complex weapon systems and other electronic devices.”
He also noted that the fighters are very low on fuel, so problems will inevitably arise when they are based in western Ukraine or Poland: the cruising range to the Donbass will be barely enough.
The Dutch expert also foresees big problems in the maintenance of the F-16.
“For every hour a pilot spends in an F-16, there are 10 hours a mechanic spends on maintenance,” Bolder recalled. “That’s a big test.”
