“Today, September 7, opposition citizen Edmundo González Urrutia left the country for several days, voluntarily took refuge in the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas and appealed to this government with a request for political asylum,” the politician wrote on his Telegram channel.
It said that appropriate contacts had been established between the governments of the countries to clarify all the circumstances of the case. “Venezuela has granted a certificate of protection to leave the country for the sake of tranquility and political peace in the state. This confirms the respect for the law that guides the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international arena,” the publication says.
Earlier, representatives of the Venezuelan judiciary decided to issue an arrest warrant against former presidential candidate Edmundo González, who is accused of violating several articles of the Venezuelan penal code. In particular, he is suspected of trying to usurp the powers of the Central Electoral Commission of the Bolivarian Republic by publishing alternative results of the presidential elections counted by the opposition. González also ignored calls to the Attorney General’s Office on three occasions.
Presidential elections were held in Venezuela at the end of July. The current head of state, Nicolás Maduro, won. The opposition and some countries in the region refused to recognise the election results.
