Gergiev and musicians from the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theaters held a festival in Smolensk – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 12, 2024 Time: 16:11:05

On the occasion of the 220th anniversary of Glinka’s birth, Valery Gergiev and musicians from the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theaters presented the opera “Life for the Tsar”, a chamber concert and two symphonic concerts in Smolensk. The history of the production of this opera by Glinka is closely related to the history of the Mariinsky Theater: it was here that in 1836 its premiere took place on the stage of the Bolshoi Stone Theater (the predecessor of the Mariinsky), and in 1860. It was with This opera was inaugurated at the Mariinsky Theatre, rebuilt after a fire. “A Life for the Tsar” (as well as Glinka’s second opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila”) is constantly present in the Mariinsky repertoire. The performance, seen by residents of Smolensk, is performed on the Mariinsky Stage, under the direction of Dmitry Chernyakov, with the revamped dances of the Polish number choreographed by Sergei Koren and Andrei Lopukhov from the 1939 production.

Today, unfortunately, Glinka’s music – and in addition to his grandiose operas, these include several symphonic works, chamber vocal lyrics and piano works – is not a frequent guest in concert halls, and Mariinsky musicians discover Glinka’s music in his homeland. Maestro Gergiev stressed that the events of these two days, in terms of the richness and variety of Glinka’s presented works, could well constitute an independent festival named after the great Russian composer.

The “Genius of the Place” festival coincided with the traditional All-Russian Music Festival named after MI Glinka, this year it was held in Smolensk for the 66th time.

On the birthday of the great compatriot, June 1, Smolensk residents traditionally gather at his monument and, after several short official speeches, everyone lays flowers at the monument. Glinka’s compatriots love him: the monument itself was opened solely thanks to public donations on May 20, 1885. Among those present were Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Arensky, Balakirev, Taneyev and Glazunov. On the fence of the monument there are lines of music with fragments of Glinka’s works, the composer is depicted in full height at a lectern with a conductor’s baton in his hand, on one side of the pedestal there is a bronze crown with the inscription : “Glinke – Russia, 1885.” These words coincide with the idea of the “Genius Loci” festival. According to Maestro Gergiev, “the celebration of such a festival is the best that musicians can offer in gratitude for the fact that this land has given Russia and the world great composers. We are indebted to these composers.”

The Mariinsky musicians, together with Valery Gergiev, repeatedly performed in Smolensk as part of the Easter Festival, but for the first time they showed an opera, a full performance on the stage of the Drama Theater, and for the first time musicians from the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theater he joined the musicians of the Mariinsky Orchestra.

Direct speech

Valery Gergiev:

On behalf of all musicians, of whom there are millions, I want to thank the land of Smolensk for Glinka. If it weren’t for him, there wouldn’t be much else. I am convinced that Glinka deserves an annual celebration in his name, a full-fledged grand festival.

This is a very serious theater, it is necessary to bring it to the status of a real opera. Smolensk is an important city for Russia, where one performance a year of the opera of a great compatriot is expected. This may happen more frequently. And here it is necessary to represent not only the works of Glinka.

Smolensk is one of the great Russian cities, of course, here it is absolutely necessary to visit the ancient city walls, the grandiose Assumption Cathedral, which more eloquently than any words give an idea of this place and history, and the opera . almost two centuries after the time of writing this article, it speaks of the greatness, inaccessibility and free spirit of our Homeland, and resonates with everything that is happening now; This is not the first time that Russia has gone through such a scenario.

We want to do everything possible so that new generations, and not only in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, know the music of great composers; we worked a lot in the regions and now as a united orchestra of the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theaters. That is why the idea of holding the “Genius of the Place” festival was a great success and is now celebrated before many thousands of Russians. And this is not done by order, but by order of the soul and heart.

With the Easter festival, we travel to about 70 regions, we visit many more than once and each time we add a region in which we have not yet performed, or present something in which we have not yet performed, like, for example, now in Smolensk. For the first time, the complete work “A Life for the Tsar” was screened.
