In the German capital Berlin, in the immediate vicinity of the Bundestag, sympathizers of the “Last Generation” environmental movement desecrated the “Basic Law 49” monument.
The monument consists of tall glass panels etched with the main articles of the German Constitution in its original version of 1949. They are now filled with black paint. The vandals said it was oil.
“Last generation (Letzte Generation)” – a radical movement of environmentalists; its leadership has already claimed responsibility for the action, trying to explain its symbolism. According to environmental activists, the German government does not protect the basic rights of citizens. “Burn oil or protect rights? In 2023, only one of the two is possible,” the movement said in a statement.
Berlin police said they had already identified six people who were directly involved in the action. The damage to the monument is currently being assessed.
